“If you want to get something you’ve never had, you need to do things you’ve never done before.” This is one lesson my 3 sons remember hearing distinctly from their football coach.
I remember hearing him yell that statement of truth down the field at the team time and time again. It’s funny how we pick up on the seemingly small things that will actually have a great impact in our lives, IF we act on them.
The same is true about Parkinson’s Law, which states: “Work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion.”
When I first learned about Parkinson’s Law, I immediately thought of the many times in my life that I needed to meet a deadline at the last minute. I was able to get it done, no problem.
And then there were those times when I would give myself a leisurely amount of time to get a project done. And I would get it done, no problem.
But the difference is that I probably could get things done faster and complete more projects if I would constrain the time allotted to a shorter amount. When I tested it out, it worked!
Now I get SO much done in a given week. Most of my friends and colleagues always ask me how do I get so much done and I tell them about Parkinson’s Law.
Most of us are natural procrastinators and if left to our own devices, we’ll wait until the last minute to take action on things. While I used to love cramming for exams in high school and college, my “seasoned” nervous system can’t take that amount of pressure anymore.
Instead, I constrain tasks to 1-4 hours at a time, no more, no less. And then I get to work. I stay committed to the end. I get a TON accomplished every single week.
